New vehicle of the month

Alwin Limited, based in Cradley Heath, West Midlands, took delivery of 2 new Scania vehicles on 1 June 2009 increasing the number of Scanias in their fleet to 6 out of a total of 14 heavy vehicles.

The new vehicles are a P380CB6x4MHZ skip loader & possibly the only R480LB6x2MNA Highline hook loader in the country, both complete with Hyva equipment. The vehicles have been supplied on a 5 year deal with a full repair & maintenance package at Keltruck West Bromwich. Build quality & contribution to driver retention were cited as the main reasons for going with the Scania product according to David Rowlingson, Managing Director.

The vehicles were supplied by Keltruck's Gary Hughes.

Visit flickr.com/photos/keltruck for photographs of other Scania vehicles supplied by Keltruck.

Meet the team

Andrew BentleyThis month sees the third installment of our new feature where, each month, we profile a member of the top team. This month Used Sales Manager Phil Holmes...

Kelnews: How would you describe your role at Keltruck?
PH: Always there to help all departments when the need arises (which is most of the time!) However, back to the day job controlling a team of five used salesmen including myself on a day-to-day basis dealing with customers from all walks of life, from boardroom level to the owner driver at the grass roots of business. Other responsibilities are building up our exports or, as some of my colleagues say, "Off on holiday again!"

Kelnews: How long have you worked for Keltruck?
PH: I have been working for Keltruck for 4½ years now.

Kelnews: What did you do before Keltruck?
PH: I first joined East Midland Commercials in 1994 (which was part owned by Chris Kelly) as Used Sales Manager with an appointment to Director in 2001 through to December 2004 when Keltruck purchased the company in its entirety, so a total 14½ years working within the Scania family.

Kelnews: So how did you get into the industry then?
PH: As I came from a farming family, repairing vehicles & plant etc was part of every day life, so my first job in the industry was as a fitter (as we were known then) for a plant hire company. I did a City & Guilds in mechanical engineering &, at 21, took HGV 1 as I wanted to 'burn rubber'. I started to split my work between low loader driving and the workshop. I then changed employment taking a position repairing vehicles & plant for an independent used truck & plant dealer which is were I cut my teeth as I would often spend time in the sales office at weekends and early evening, finally moving into full time sales in 1983 through to 1994. The education gained in this position was not available through any college or university
it can only be described as a qualification of QBE (qualified by experience)!

Kelnews: What do you like about the industry?
PH: There are no two days the same as every day hosts a new challenge.

Kelnews: What do you do outside of work?
PH: Having three females in the house leaves me vulnerable as two of them are teenagers, worse still my eldest works for Keltruck so I can't even get away during the day! Joking apart, I don't know what I would do without all three of them as we all share common interest in water skiing so during summer months we spend a lot of time together at weekends as both of our daughters are competitive with Nicola in the GB barefoot team and Danielle in the West Midlands team so myself & Jayne are kept busy. When time allows my other sporting passion is Formula 1.

Kelnews: What was your first car?!
PH: First car best not spoken about (it only lasted 3 days!) After that they were bought & sold again so moving quickly on the first car that I kept was Escort MkII RS2000 (AJ, I am just as sad: NOH 13R) &, after that, a Ford Capri 2.8 Injection followed by a Audi Quattro 2.3 which can only be described as driving on railway lines with corners (the best!)

Kelnews: So what does the future hold?
PH: As many have said before me, the next 18 months will be tough but there will always be a home for a used vehicle so keep up with technology giving the customer fast response at all times as web sites are only as good as the information on them. Be in the right place at the right time and be there first.

Exceptional customer service deserves recognition

Have you received exceptional service from a member of staff at Keltruck? If so, please tell us about it.

Congratulations to:

  • Steve Fletcher & all the staff at Keltruck Sutton in Ashfield. From Mr Steve Bird of Consort Windows, Huthwaite, Notts: "Consort Ltd recently placed an order for six 18 tonne rigid vehicles replacing existing vehicles also supplied by Keltruck. I would like to take this opportunity to raise the following points. Although the price of the new vehicles had to be competitive, as it was the service we have received on our existing vehicles has been OUTSTANDING and the decision to 'move' to another supplier/manufacturer would have been difficult and disappointing. Our drivers appreciate the vehicles. Fuel consumption is good. The reliability has been outstanding. Thanks to all, particularly 'our' salesman, Steve Fletcher, and your fantastic maintenance depot at Sutton in Ashfield, both admin and maintenance. Long may our relationship continue."
